Acoustic treatments for chemical plants

Acoustic treatments in industry

We are at a chemical-pharmaceutical industry in Barcelona (Spain).

In November 2020, Bureau Veritas carried out a series of measurements in homes near the industrial plant to check compliance with noise regulations. This evaluation showed an unfavourable result at one of the points analysed at night.

Subsequently, in February 2021, they commissioned environmental consultants and advisors to carry out a study to characterise the most important noise sources. The idea was to determine the noise sources that most contribute to the non-compliance. The results indicated that the noisiest sources are the air outlets of the scrubbers (air emission cleaning systems), water pumps and cooling towers.

Initially, a large acoustic barrier was installed with Acustimodul-80A panels and a structure adapted for the plant's cooling towers. This barrier was extended in the second phase with the incorporation of the rest of the corrective measures.

To control the sound emission of the Scrubbers, SNC acoustic silencers are installed in their chimneys.

The noise generated by the air conditioners was attenuated by installing acoustic barriers with Acustimodul-80A panels. They were installed on top of the fans with an RS7C type acoustic door to allow access during maintenance operations.

The sound emission of the AA-2P fan was corrected by installing SNA acoustic silencers at the inlet and outlet, with a soundproofed hopper adapted to the particular situation.

Once the installation of all the corrective measures was completed, we carried out an acoustic measurement to verify compliance with the applicable noise regulations. Verifying that the objective was achieved.

Noise control work in industry always follows a very similar pattern. Once the noise sources that generate the nuisance have been analysed, by means of an acoustic study, corrective measures are designed adapted to the specific situation of the sources and their particular geometric situation. After the installation of the acoustic treatments, the corresponding measures are taken to check compliance with noise regulations.

The work follows an economy of scale, treating the most annoying noise sources first, and treating the other less important sources according to their contribution to the level of exceedance of the standard.
